2021 marks the fifth year of
Grant A Guitar Scholarships
and the second year under the pandemic
The Grant A Guitar Scholarship is awarded each year to students in order to foster music appreciation and fluency – and, ultimately, to amplify the power that music has to improve our daily lives.
Thank you to all who submitted essays - and especially to every individual and organization who contributed to Grant A Guitar. It is thanks to your generosity that we are able to extend the love and literacy of music to wider and wider audiences

Congratulations Ellla B! She is the recipient of a 2021 Grant A Guitar Scholarship.
A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health shows young adults are experiencing increases in loneliness and associated increases in mental health problems during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The paper recommends intervention strategies to address "loneliness and feelings of reduced social support, "especially for those who may have had greater disruption in their social lives.

In our fifth year of offering the Grant A Guitar and the second during the pandemic, we chose our theme to be "How music has helped connect you to the people and beliefs that you hold most dear during the COVID-19 Pandemic?"
Ella's essay was funny, poignant, and gave us a peek into how she - and others - are using music to navigate these very complicated times.

You can read her winning essay HERE. It wasn't until after we meth with Ella that we learned she had been wanting to learn guitar but had no prior experience. Even though she had no experience playing musical instruments, she submitted her essay anyhow - and that is exactly what we hope for. The Grant A Guitar scholarships are not skills based - they are not based on financial need - they are based upon where and how music may have the greatest positive impact on our lives.

In October 2019, The Music Settlement announced their 2019 – 2020 recipients of the Grant a Guitar Scholarship.
